General Information About the Department:

The purpose of Tourism Guidance Department is to train skilled Tourist Guides that meet the demands of the tourism industry in line with the vision of our University. A qualified tourist guide is a person who guides domestic and foreign tourists within the scope of a specific program, conveys accurate information about the places of visit within the scope of the program in the appropriate language, promotes the country or region, and helps tourists to get the right social-economic and cultural impressions.

Our department's objective is to educate students who possess a deep understanding of Atatürk's Principles and Revolutions, a strong connection to our national culture and core values, a societal and innovative mindset, a dedication to their nation and global welfare, an entrepreneurial spirit, a sense of responsibility, a commitment to scientific inquiry and ethics, as well as an awareness of their own agency and a global perspective. The program's goal is to prepare proactive, well-prepared tourist guides and aspiring managers who exhibit proficient foreign language skills, possess a profound knowledge of their country's historical narrative, cultural diversity, and natural abundance, and possess the ability to critically analyze global contexts.

Tourism guidance students graduate by completing a 4-year curriculum that combines different disciplines. Graduates of the department are entitled to work as a licensed tourist guide under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism by successfully meeting the conditions specified in the legislation. They can also work independently as regional or national tourist guides in travel agencies. Even if they are not licensed, they can organize operations in the tourism sector, lead tours, and be employed as information officers or managers in tour planning and ticket sales departments within travel agencies. In addition to these, they can establish their own travel businesses and provide guidance services in museums and archaeological sites. They can also work as academicians provided that they meet the necessary conditions.

Department Learning Objectives:

The main purpose of the Tourism Guidance Department is to raise professional tourist guides who know at least two foreign languages and have the knowledge and equipment to introduce our country and the natural, cultural, historical and geographical assets of the world that are subject to tourism to domestic and foreign tourists in the best way.

Scientific and Professional Qualifications:

Knowledge (Program Qualifications):

  • Knowledge of legal regulations, professional rights and obligations related to tourist guiding.
  • Defining basic concepts in the field of tourism and tourist guiding.
  • To be able to convey professional information in at least two foreign languages.
  • To be a group leader by introducing the cultural and geographical features of the country in detail on tours.
  • Specialize in Turkey's archaeological, historical and geographical values related to the profession of tourist guiding and undertake the task of promoting the country.
  • Following the innovations related to tourism and tourism profession and improving oneself.
  • Reaching a high level of awareness about the protection of cultural and natural heritage assets in Turkey.
  • To be able to use other different cultures, religions and civilizations in the world by blending them with examples from Turkey.
  • Being able to produce solutions for the country's tourism within the framework of sustainable tourism by mastering alternative tourism types and creating awareness.
  • Being able to do scientific studies with all the equipment he / she has received during his / her education.

Skills (Field Competencies):

  • Having advanced knowledge and equipment in the fields such as general tourism, history, art history, archeology, religion, mythology, tourism geography, flora and fauna, tourism marketing, guidance professional knowledge, tourism legislation, communication, business, management and organization, first aid and health knowledge related to Tourism Guidance and knowing and applying scientific research methods in these fields.
  • Knowing the legal regulations, professional rights and obligations related to the profession.
  • To be able to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the field of tour organization, tour planning and management in the business environment.
  • Having the ability to communicate verbally and in writing at the level of B2 in a foreign language that will be necessary for professional life and having knowledge of a second foreign language.

 

Career / Employment Opportunities:

Students who graduate from tourism guidance program work as tour and hotel guides in A, B and C group travel agencies, tour operators and tour operators who are members of the Turkish Travel Agencies Association (TURSAB) in all local and international tours. In addition, students can work in institutions and organizations affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism after graduation.

Recognition of Prior Learning:

Transition to Higher Degree Programs: Students who graduate from the Tourism Guidance program at the undergraduate level can enroll in graduate programs in different departments related to Tourism.
